Electrostatic Precipitators

Sargent & Lundy has considerable electrostatic experience with new generation, backfitting to existing units, and upgrading existing precipitators. This experience includes preparation of performance specifications, detailed hardware specifications for the components, and bid evaluations. We have engineered cold-side precipitators for high-sulfur bituminous coal and lignite, and both cold- and hot-side precipitators for low-sulfur coals. Coal ash characteristics have a significant impact on precipitator performance, and our experience covers a broad range of fly ash.

New installations and retrofit projects

We provide thorough economic and technical evaluations of site-specific factors to help you decide whether to install a new particulate control system or to upgrade existing equipment. We can also carry retrofit projects through to successful completion. Our extensive construction management experience and state-of-the-art model shop are both valuable tools for retrofit applications.

Fabric Filters

Our significant expertise with baghouse implementation projects for both small and large utility units encompasses the three types of baghouses considered as standard applications by the industry:

  • Reverse air
  • Pulse jet
  • COHPAC baghouses

We can help you assess whether to adopt fabric filters or cold-side rigid electrode precipitators for fly ash collection at low-sulfur coal-fired units. Our studies evaluate fabric filter arrangements that can provide more flexibility than those of a precipitator as well as the higher collection efficiencies and ability to accommodate wide fluctuations in fuel and ash analyses.
